Poetry Friday: Recalling Fall

It’s Poetry Friday!

Thanks to Margaret Simon, I was inspired to check out the September poetry prompts offered by Audrey Gidman here. In addition to the prompts, I am also finding many new poems and poets. Yesterday’s challenge was to read “If You Have Had Your Midnights” by Mari Evans, then write a two-stanza poem in her style, beginning each stanza as she did – the first with “If you” and the second with “I.”

To the Hummingbird Who Visits Daily
(after Mari Evans)

If you have had
your fill at the feeder
and it has laden
your tiny belly
with nourishment

I seek you safety as you journey
and joy
and insects along the way
Draft, RoseCappelli2026

I can never write today’s date without remembering the events of this day twenty-five years ago. Here’s a small offering

In Remembrance

as buildings collapse
bravery knows no bounds
heroes among us

Linda has the roundup today at Teacher Dance where she is also remembering. Be sure to stop by for lots of poetry goodness.

Rose, a beautiful remembrance, and ode to the hummingbird that visits daily! Love that, and especially love the alliteration of “I seek you safety..” Thank you for the reminder about Audrey Gidman’s inspiring prompts!

You matched so neatly Mari’s poem and yet shifted the tone beautifully. Nice! Remembering with you…

Dear Rose, your wishes for that dear hummingbird is so sweet, & I agree, each of us must send our thanks to those many heroes on that day! Thanks for that, too!

What lovely care for your hummingbird – beautiful, wishing him/her joy. And, bravery without bounds was something to behold during that horrific day, and dark days to follow. Thanks for the remembrance!

Love your hummingbird poem! And you are so right. Just those two words together — nine eleven — carry such emotional weight now…and always.

The poem form works so well as you express your wishes for hummingbirds. I am trying to keep my feeders fresh for the passers-through. And yes, yes to the heroes of 9/11, the ones we know and the ones only God knows.

Rose, your 9/ll poem is a beautiful remembrance. This line, “bravery knows no bounds”, is a tribute on that memorable day and the days that followed. I like how you added the word, journey, in your first poem.

Lovely hummimgbird poem Rose. I really like the simple format of this type of poem. IT reminds me of Irene and Charles’ book “If I Could Choose a Best Day.” Some how just using “If” opens a whole world of possibilities! Going to try some of those myself. Thanks for sharing.
