It’s Poetry Friday!
I think of summer as a time to slow down a bit, notice more, fill the well of ideas. I’m trying to be more appreciative of nature’s treasures. Sometimes it’s a flower that just happened to pop up, sometimes a new bird at the feeder. A few weeks ago, it was some spiders who paid me a visit. Three different locations, but all in the same day.
Spider Encounters
A tiny yellow spider crawled
from the cut zinnias.
I marveled at its color,
then returned it to nature,
hoping it finds its way.
Another, this one brown,
explored the basil, then
looked up, greeting me
as if it wanted to converse.
But the most glorious sight of all
was not the spider itself,
but the dew-spangled web
attached to the bluebird box.
Gifts of nature,
all sizes, shapes, and colors –
a mirror of our world.
Draft, 2026RoseCappelli

This photo was taken during my round of checking bluebird bozes at Longwood Gardens. You might have to zoom in to see the web hanging on the side. No bluebird nest or eggs, but a wonder of nature nonetheless.
Jill has the roundup here today! Be sure to stop by to learn how to make a zine and for lots of poetry goodness.
I see it! I love this appreciation of spiders. One of my favorite childhood books was Be Nice to Spiders (it came in the Weekly Reader subscription!). xo

Three cheers for the spiders and their important place in our world! We recently had a door-to-door pesticide salesgirl who came to our door wanting to brush all the cobwebs out of our porch corners and spray for spiders. Nope, I said. We love the spiders and we want them here. She didn’t get it.

Rose, enjoyed joining you through out your spider spotting adventures. Your poem has such a nice rhythm like a walk and wonderful whimsy, love…looked up, greeting me as if it wanted to converse. Thanks for taking us along on Spider Encounters:)

Rose, a walk around Longwood Gardens-how wonderful! It is a beautiful place to love nature. The spiders seem to be roaming around these days. My son found one and let it go back to nature as you said. Your poem is delightful.

I’ve been seeing lots of dew-spangled webs on my morning walks and wish I could get a good photo of them. They are fascinating.

Rose, I used to love seeing spider webs with dew in Iowa. It’s been a long time since I lived in a place where there is dew! “dew-spangled web” is such a glorious way to describe them. I love the summary at the end of your spidery poem. Such wonders in nature! Thanks.
