Poetry Friday: It’s the Season

October Morning

dancing in shadows

Today is Poetry Friday!

One of our recent prompts/challenges at the Nevermores was to write about a fifth season. The first thing that came to mind was the old Donovan song from the ’60’s, “Season of the Witch.”

Since Halloween is next week, here’s something to get you in the mood:

Witching Season

eye of newt and toe of frog
sips and slurps of wicked grog

magic spells from charms and chants
spewing forth in reeling rants

hoots and howls and spooks that crawl
a talisman, a crystal ball

wind that whistles through the trees
broomsticks buoyant in the breeze

scary things across the region
all because of witching season

Thanks for reading! Patricia has the roundup today at her blog, Reverie. Be sure to stop by for lots of poetry goodness.

Rose, I love the “fifth season” prompt! Your poem belongs in a book beside “something wicked this way comes…” xo

  2. I’m loving seeing this again. Now “wind that whistles through the trees” jumps out at me — perhaps in concert with what’s happening outside my picture window. 🙂

Wow, Rose, I love the “blushing leaves”. They do! And your ‘fifth season’ is so wonderful! The alliteration is terrific & reading it made me read it aloud – terrific!

What? A fifth season? Ooooooooh la la. What a thought. I love the idea of that. I need to noodle around with that one…especially with “buoyant broomsticks!” Thanks. Halloween is a perfect fifth season. So many people love it. I am not in love with Halloween but I enjoy how much friends and family get into the spirit with nifty costumes and oh, the delicious chocolate candy! My grandfather was partial to Snickers and I still think of him around this time of year. Gosh, you’ve already got me writing…maybe I can keep this going. Thanks!

Hee hee hee–rhyming “season” and “region”! I love this witchy weird song. I know lots of folks who would vote for Halloween as a fifth season, and of course Chinese medicine recognizes 5 seasons with the extra one around this time of year. https://www.wuweicreations.com/post/understanding-the-five-seasons-in-chinese-medicine

Meanwhile, I had precisely the October morning trail moment that you describe on Friday, along the Potomac River. Thanks for capturing it for me!

Rose, your poems are perfect for this time of year. I so love the autumn, and I was excited to get to spend time in Minneapolis last weekend, where the “blushing leaves” were dancing. So lovely! Your fifth season poem was lots of fun too. Wow–such great meter and rhyme. It seems you really had fun with that. It is spot on.

I love that first poem and the double meaning hidden inside — are the leaves dancing, or is it the speaker? Or BOTH!
