Poetry Friday: Before Summer Slips Away

It’s Poetry Friday! Margaret has the roundup today at Reflections on the Teche with a taste of her recent trip to Scotland. Be sure to stop by for lots of poetry goodness.

The seasons seem a bit mixed up this year. After a very chilly and rainy spring, we jumped right into summer heat and humidity. It’s barely September and already the air is chilly, the shadows long, the vibrant hydrangeas a memory. I love fall with its deep russets and golds, sweater weather temps, and all things pumpkin and spice. But it seems early to bid farewell to summer. I’m trying to savor these last days as best I can, some of which is reflected in my list poem for today.

Before Summer Slips Away…

indulge in ice cream from a local creamery
grill corn on the cob in their husks
dine al fresco at sunset
plan a picnic
plant tulip bulbs
stargaze under the midnight sky
tickle your toes in ocean’s tide
burn a candle with a summery scent
pick a bouquet of wildflowers
answer the geese honking goodbyes
celebrate each day, each moment…

before summer slips away.

Thanks for the reminder to savor what is left of summer. The year passed much too quickly, and now Fall is in a big hurry to get here!

Rose, I agree with you that it seems early to bid farewell to summer. I also am savoring the last days of such a multifaceted summer. Your poem holds many thoughts that I love. I could use an creamy ice cream right now. I look forward to enjoying the wonderful moment of summer for a couple of weeks even though I am starting to add some fallish colors into my house.

I love fall, but it does feel like summer is ending too soon. It may surprise us and make a return like it sometimes does. Your poem is a beautiful reminder to find joy in every day!

Loved your poem Rose – can just picture all the things you will be doing in the weeks til summer’s end. You inspired me to write my own poem, based on yours. Thanks so much for the inspiration.

Oh, I love a great list poem! This is a wonderful mentor poem, and I’m definitely going to play around in my notebook. Thanks for reminding me to eke every moment of juice out of summer before welcoming the coming fall splendor.

Yes, ma’am! As much as I enjoy Fall…that slipping of summer is wrenching. I am not ready to let go of those activities you list. This weekend, I’ll hang my clothes out to dry in the sun so that I can capture some of that fresh summer air scent when I wear them next. Great poem.

I recently started finding list poems and I find them fascinating as you can include so many thoughts. Your end-of-summer list is so visual and a reminder that though September has arrived, there are many summery things still to enjoy, ( despite the Halloween stuff out at Home Depot!)

  11. I feel summer slipping away and it makes me so sad! 😦 We got a new firepit and I was thinking about the Nevermores morning and evening gatherings in the cool California air.

my friend always makes a long list like this at the beginning of summer, and loves to see how many she can complete before school begins again in the fall. lovely.

  13. Rose, What a wonderful list of things to do before summer slips away. I love a good list! You’ve reminded me to live fully these last few days of light that lingers before and early dusk. It’s been cool (15 degrees below normal) here and very fall like this week. It feels like October. Thanks for an inspiring post!

Love the alliteration of “summer slips away,” Rose.

I do love fall dearly, but it’s also wistful to see summer slip away. Lovely, Rose!
