Welcome to Poetry Friday!
“Goats have a special capacity for friendship and companionship both to humans and each other. They form inseparable friendships while foraging during the heat of the sun, or snuggled close to each other at night.” – Andre Harvey (1941-2018), American Sculptor
I’ve written many times about the beauty of Longwood Gardens, but I don’t think I ever wrote about Chloe and Lucinda, two goats sculpted in bronze that reside in a small area of the Gardens. When I walk through the gardens, I often find myself stopping by to admire them and soak up their energy. They were sculpted by Andre Harvey, a local artist who was inspired by his childhood growing up in a rural area of southeastern Pennsylvania. I love their simplicity and the way they express such kindness and love for each other.

Yesterday Chloe and Lucinda inspired me to write this triolet. I have a few friends who are going through difficult times right now, so I dedicate this poem to them.
Two Friends
Kindness and love from two special friends
cast in bronze, part of my heart.
Weighing life struggles and need for amends,
kindness and love from two special friends.
Thoughts dispersed like light that bends
lifting spirits, worries depart.
Kindness and love from two special friends
cast in bronze, part of my heart.

You’ve used this form well to capture the feeling between two long time friends. Those goats are cute.

Rose, maybe Chloe and Lucinda would make great characters in a friendship picture book?? xo

Rose, I have had the pleasure of visiting Longwood Gardens twice (once in fall and once for a holiday display) and loved every minute there. I don’t recall seeing Chloe and Lucinda though. Now, I have a reason to return, and if I find them, your triolet will echo through my memory!

This is so lovely and heartfelt, Rose. I have a pb ms with goats as the main characters making the rounds…though they aren’t really as sweet as Chloe and Lucinda! xo

I’m sorry your friends are having some tough times. They are fortunate to have you. And, I did not know this about goats–friendliness. How about that? Now that sculpture means something to me as well as the energy I get from the photo and your triolet. It’s one of my favorite forms. I echo Irene’s hint of a PB 🙂

I agree – triolets are fun to write. Thanks for your words and the nudge. I’ll keep mulling that PB idea.

Rose, This is a beautiful poem. Thank you for sharing it. As you know I love Longwood Gardens and would share your inspiration you receive from going there. We saw some goats in Ireland. I was able to photograph several groups of them, as i did the sheep (which were all over). I’m sure your friends appreciate your caring and kind heart.

Rose, I am sorry that I did not have time on Friday to comment. I may have caught a virus from the baby grand on Sunday and it is slowing me down. I traveled to Longwood Gardens with family years ago. The sweet, bronzed goats may not have been. Thanks for sharing their calming influence. It is welcomed. I love the repetition to your poem that also is calming. Thoughts dispersed like light that bends
lifting spirits
Your friends must treasure that poem.

What a wonderful way to capture the energy you feel and the kindness extended with these words. Is it a function of our age that so many friends are experiencing hard times? I especially love these lines:
“Thoughts dispersed like light that bends
lifting spirits, worries depart.”
Thanks for sharing with us.

Thank you, Ramona. I agree that with age comes difficulties, with health and grief especially.
