It’s Poetry Friday and I’m happy to be participating this week, back from a week of vacation at the beach with my family.
“Summer Snapshot” was the theme of the free verse poetry contest over at Renee LaTulippe’s Lyrical Language Lab. First of all, congratulations to Poetry Friday regulars Heidi Mordhorst on her third-place win and Linda Mitchell for her honorable mention. You can read their poems here.
I carried that theme around with me all summer and used it to capture a few snapshots in words while I was away. The ones I’m sharing all have to do with place and landscape. This month I’m finishing up several poetry books I started but didn’t complete, my own version of the Sealy Challenge. I just finished You Are Here: Poetry in the Natural World edited by Ada Limón. So everything seems to be fitting together well.
Snapshots from the Beach
i
seagull swoops
plucks treasure from the tide
early morning forager
ii
seaweed surprises
roll across the sandy shore
like tumbling tumbleweeds
iii
shades of blue
fade into aquamarine
sea-sky slow dance

Molly has the roundup today at Nix the Comfort Zone. Be sure to stop by and feel all the JOY she is spreading.
such a perfect photo to pair with your beautiful poem 😊

Sea-sky slow dance!!
It’s been a long while since I’ve been to the beach… and that line, along with the shades of blue, seems so nostalgic.

Rose, I was delighted to read the winning poems in Renee’s contest. Of course, Heidi’s and Linda’s were my favorites. Thank you so much for sharing them with us. I appreciated all the connections for you, with the You Are Here collection, the Summer Snapshot contest, and your beach trip so beautifully captured. One of my favorite lines and I’m imagining it each time I read it: “sea-sky slow dance”

These are beautiful snapshots, Rose! I am especially partial to that “sea-sky slow dance” of the third one with all those lovely “s” sounds. Most of all, I like the idea of you enjoying your summer with the lens of poetry. Thanks for sharing!

Nice, Rose! I did the Sealy Challenge two years ago but haven’t done it since. I mix poetry and mystery novels and too much of one is not a good fit for me. I did have a stack of poetry books out earlier this summer – I enjoyed your haiku and am writing some myself these days! I hope the rest of your summer is just as breathtaking as your photo.
