Last week I spent a few days in the mountains with my children and grandchildren. On one of our morning walks I came upon a frog who had recently met his demise. While the vacation was filled with laughter and joy and the collection of memories, my thoughts kept returning to the frog. So I wrote about it.
The Frog That Once Knew
On a morning walk, wonder abounded in
the towering trees,
the gentle lap of the lake,
the sparkling sun.
I was not expecting the frog that once knew
the shade of the trees,
the skin-quenching lake,
the warmth of the sun.
A reminder that there is
no light without dark,
no joy without sorrow,
no victory without defeat.

I love that you showed both sides to your chance encounter with this wee amphibian. The fact that he once knew, we now know through your poem. 🙂

I love that you know when a thought or experience lingers, you write about it. And writing about it lead you to create a poem rich with a deeper meaning. Thanks for sharing.

God rest him in peace. That walk led you to think more deeply about life than you originally had planned?

Giving thought and poem to little things that often go unheeded is very special, Rose. I love that you did not forget!

We’ve successfully raised lots of perfect glorious black swallowtails this summer, but my mind keeps returning to the one with the wonky wings who will never soar. I feel you when your thoughts returned to the frog!

Awwwww. I’ve had similar moments. But, I don’t think I wrote about them so eloquently. Beautiful capture of a moment.

What a beautiful, poignant, poem. I love the parallels between the lines in each of the stanzas, and the the way you use the words in the title.

Rose, I did not see your final thoughts coming. The last stanza is inspirational as a final reflection.
