Part of the perks of being on a book award committee is getting books to review. Last week I received a box of books from Boyds Mills Press (thank you!). So here’s what I’ll be reading this week:
A few I’ve gotten started with include:
Dreaming of You by Amy Ludwig VanDerwater and illustrated by Aaron DeWitt is, well…just dreamy! Amy’s lyrical language and Aaron’s inviting illustrations combine to deliver a wonderful read, perfect for bedtime or any time a story is begging to be read.
In I Just Like You, Suzanne Bloom reminds young readers that friends don’t have to be exactly alike, and that we should appreciate the diversity we find in the world. Perfect for preschoolers!
A Lady Has the Floor: Belva Lockwood Speaks Out for Women’s Rights is a wonderful picture book biography by Kate Hannigan, illustrated by Alison Jay. I learned a lot about this lesser known (at least to me) champion of equal rights. Belva Lockwood was the first woman to appear on a presidential ballot, and she did it at a time when women couldn’t vote! This book includes a timeline and primary source quotes making it a perfect mentor text for young nonfiction writers.
Garbage Island by Fred Koehler will be my travel read as I make my way to Houston for NCTE 18 later in the week.
Sounds like there are some great books in your stack. Garbage Island is on my list to read soon. I have to figure out what to bring as my travel read for NCTE. I’ll probably bring a couple, but I always have less time to read than I think I’ll have.

So true about the time to read at NCTE! But there are always lots more books to pick up.

Thanks so much for the heads up about these books. I’m especially interested in A Lady Has the Floor. My library doesn’t have a copy so I might have to recommend it as a purchase!

I just received a copy of Garbage Island and I’m hoping to squeeze it in this week (along with Wundersmith, which BETTER arrive tomorrow since it’s been on order since May – LOL). I was curious about being on an award committee and having trouble getting to titles in time. We’re in a secluded area and it’s difficult to get either of our local libraries to get new books (and I cannot purchase them all). So that’s wonderful that you’re supplied with copies to ensure you get to everything in time. Still a huge commitment, I imagine. Enjoy your time at NCTE, Rose!!

I’m curious about Garbage Island as well. And also picking out NCTE travel reading. Of course I don’t really want to carry any books with me, as I’ll get plenty of books there, but I need something good for the flight and first day!

We can’t wait to see you at NCTE!! Let us know what you think of Garbage Island. We are packing Blended by Sharon Draper for the plane flight and hoping to pick up a copy of Lindy Mullaly Hunt’s new book, Shouting at the Rain, in the exhibit hall. Safe Travels.

Best thing I love about being a book blogger is receiving boxes of books too. 🙂 Memphis Martin and the Mountaintop is on my to-read list. 🙂
