I am participating in the March Slice of Life Story Challenge. Thanks to the co-authors of Two Writing Teachers for creating this supportive community.
In the past few days I’ve greeted old friends I hadn’t seen in a while and met new friends I hope to see again. With all of that, I’ve given and received a variety of hugs, so I started thinking about all the things a hug can say. Here’s a partial list:
Hello
I’m so happy to see you
Thank you
Take care
I’m sorry
I’ll miss you
You’re so special
Congratulations
I understand
I feel your pain
Goodbye
I know there are many more, but one thing is for sure – long or short, hard or soft, a hug is a warm embrace that can say so much. Make sure to give someone a hug today.
Hugs are the best, Rose. I will take your advice, and hugs to you as you journey home today.

You can’t beat a hug for an immediate mood lifter. Thanks for sharing your language of hugs today.

Great post! Love a good hug! It’s true….a hug means so many things, but most of all it makes the person who is receiving a hug feel like someone cares. Hope you are home now safe and sound!

I found this after I read your post. “There is a saying by Virginia Satir, a respected family therapist, “We need four hugs a day for survival. We need eight hugs a day for maintenance. We need twelve hugs a day for growth.” I agree. At school it was easy to get in the amount for growth, now I guess I need to work a little harder for maintenance.

I went out on a limb and gave the mother of one of my students a hug. She had a horrible morning and was feeling very overwhelmed. This is a mom who I talk to daily. I hope she knows I am always there for her…

Hugs are the best! They carry so many different meanings. Nothing like a hug for whatever the reason!

Oh, yes! The power of hugs! I never thought about all the reasons for a hug. We all need them. Sending you a hug!

Sometimes a hug can say what words can’t.
