Observations from the Road

Slice of Life2

I am participating in the March Slice of Life Story Challenge. Thanks to the co-authors of              Two Writing Teachers for creating this  supportive community.

Greetings from Charleston, SC!

You know you’ve left Pennsylvania and are in the south when…

  • Grits replace scrapple as a breakfast menu item
  • The price of gas drops significantly (at least 30 cents a gallon)
  • Most females, regardless of age or circumstance, are referred to as ma’am
  • Pine trees start to resemble large stalks of broccoli
  • You are offered boiled peanuts and/or hush puppies with most meals
  • You feel just a little bit closer to the sun

Last night we ate at a seafood restaurant. I love fresh seafood so I ordered the yellow snapper, the catch of the day. I think someone went out and snagged this guy while we were waiting!

Charleston fish

It was delicious!

Love the list, and I love the food in the South – hush puppies are so yummy! You are right – the fish looks like someone just reeled him in! Have fun, Rosie. So glad to see you here on Slice!

  4. That’s what’s so great about traveling – experiencing new things, some subtle and some not so subtle. You’ve captured a number of those Southern ways so well. I wonder if any of the waitresses called you “Hon'”… (Honey).

I had never had grits until we went to Florida the first year we were married. Maybe it was just me, but things just seemed to go at a slower pace in the South. Enjoy your trip.

Wish I were there right now. Thanks for sharing and doing your best to send some sun and warm weather to those of us that are still trying to see pieces of spring break through the winter that seems to be hanging on forever. And by the way, the yellow snapper looks delicious!

Not so sure I’d like that fish watching me eating him. You know you are not from Pennsylvania when you don’t have a clue as to what scrapple is. You won’t find that on any menu in Missouri either. Loved your list of differences.
