Welcome to Poetry Friday!
I love to look at the sky on a clear winter night. It’s a playground for noticing planets and stars. Without the veil of leaves from the trees the sky seems so much larger. I recently read an article about stargazing with the advice to wait and let your eyes adjust before trying to identify what you see. It reminded me of the advice I always heard as a teacher – to allow wait time for a response since students might process information at different rates. Waiting gives everyone a chance. You might say the same thing about stars. With thanks to the Nevermores for revision suggestions.
Star Students
Search the sky
for stars
on a clear dark night.
At first, only the brightest,
vying for attention,
will catch your eye.
Pause,
and the quiet ones
will find their light.
Pause again,
and even the shyest
will shine.

Ruth has the roundup today on her blog where she shares a poem about the ability of birds to brighten the dark days of winter. Be sure to stop by for lots of poetry goodness.
This shines, Rose! Love this wisdom.

Love the way you applied the truth of star gazing to students in the classroom! Just this week we looked up and were shocked to see so many stars even though we were smack dab in the city. Good reminder to always look up…sometimes there will be a remarkably clear sky…and stars galore (both shy and bright)!

Rose, I love the wisdom of your stargazing poem. Wait for the shy ones. The simplicity of this speaks to me and my word for 2026.

This is terrific, Rose, reminding me that patience really is a virtue! I can’t see many from my Denver home, but you are right, if I wait, the pleiades and a few others appear. Love “the shyest will shine”!

Rose, this is lovely! Being an introvert myself, I appreciate the extra moment to build a little courage. I am sure there are students everywhere who would appreciate an extra beat.

Oh, Rose!!!! I love everything about this star poem from the title to the very last word. It’s perfect in every way! Love also the reminder to wait before responding, as it was something that was second nature in my classroom but I have not been doing in retirement. Love “even the shyest/will shine”…Bravo!!!
