It’s Poetry Friday, and already May!
If you’ve read some of my recent posts, you know I’ve been writing cheritas using word prompts from Verse of Ages for my April Poetry Project. It’s been fun seeing where those prompts take me. This week I visited a food pantry, went to a wedding, and watched a family of geese out for a morning stroll. (Only the last one was an actual event this week.)
Word Prompt: scarce
No cereal for breakfast.
Jenna and Mamma walked to the pantry,
tummies rumbling.
Grateful for gifts
when food is scarce.
Grateful for a caring community.

Word prompt: row
family in the front
followed by rows and rows of friends,
fancy in their finest attire
wishing the bride and groom
a lifetime of forever
love and good fortune.

Word prompt: define
Two geese out for a morning stroll.
Five fluffy goslings follow in tow,
last one just a wee bit slow.
Hurrying along
“Hey! Wait for me!”
Nature defines a family.

I’ve never written a cherita, but your precious poems make me want to try. Thanks for sharing!

Rose, I love these – especially what you came up for define! And the scarce poem tugs at my heart. Great job! Are you going to continue with daily prompts for May? I’ve thought about it but, we’ll see. I really enjoyed having a word as a starting point. Thanks!

For May I’m following the suggestions from Georgia Heard in her newsletter Heartbeats. She invites small poems with small prompts, like “a sound you love,” “something you let go.” You can find it on her website.

I like how each cherita tells a small moment from your week. A cherita is a great form for these images.

I love how these poems captured your month! A diary of sorts.

I try to write short snippets each day, but swapped out the cheritas for that instead. So yes, it was like a diary of sorts.

Oh, that first one resonates so with me, Rose. Last night, Annabelle and I went to a fundraiser for the food bank she visits several times a week. So much food insecurity, and funding cuts ahead. :>( Thanks for this.

Lovely, Rose – of course I love the wedding one this week! And you’ve captured those geese with their goslings in words and the wonderful image. We almost always see geese families at Biltmore when the season is right. And at Furman, when we walk our dog around the lake at our alma mater. Precious! :0)

I love these, Rose. “Nature defines a family” resonated with me, what with everyone wanting to define what a real family is. I like that your some of your work reflected the real need of others. It’s a fun for and congratulations for sticking with it for a whole month!
