Thanksgiving was just a week ago, but already it’s become a fond memory. Since we were able to celebrate with family this year, the holiday took on a special kind of gratitude. I wanted it to linger a bit longer since my grandkids were visiting, but Thanksgiving has a way of quickly ushering in the hustle and bustle of Christmas and all the other celebrations of light and love around the world.
We live on a busy street that has a different vibe depending on the day or time. School buses, cars carrying commuters, delivery trucks, and fire engines all travel down our road. But on the weekend after Thanksgiving, there is no mistake that Christmas is coming. There’s something about freshly cut Christmas trees on car roofs that brings me joy and happy memories.
A Caravan of Trees
After Thanksgiving I start to see
a caravan of Christmas trees.
Perfectly picked or freshly cut,
secured on car roofs,
bundled with care.
Will they have lights
or strands of gold?
Perhaps they’ll be topped
with a shining star.
A season of peace and hope begins
with a caravan of trees.
May you all have a special season of peace and joy and love. Be sure to stop by today’s Poetry Roundup where Michelle Kogan is celebrating with words and her beautiful art.
Rose, I love how you have written about something small, small moment perhaps, and I think this would be a rich mentor poem/lesson for students. To notice the change in the traffic and you remind me how much I, too, love seeing the trees on the car roofs, heading to homes to bring light and joy for this special season. And “caravan of trees” ….a terrific phrase/line. Makes me think of the the Wise Men and their camels. Your gift of this poem and your description of our need to look more closely at our season and days not just at this busy time which seems to just fly by, but every day calls me!! Poets notice, ponder, create and help. Thank you

Thanks so much for your kind words, Janet. I almost didn’t post this poem because I felt it just wasn’t ready. So happy you found so much in it. I think I’m my own worst critic.

I am the queen of revision!!! So I do understand your reflecting on your poem. “Is this poetic enough?” I ask. Over and over. I think beauty is in the eye of the beholder sometimes and I think there is a poem for everyone! I truly felt this poem took me somewhere away from my morning musings!

Beautiful poem Rose, I love the sound and imagery of your second line, “a caravan of Christmas trees.” and how you wove this into the ending, lovely, thanks!

I agree, Rose, the season begins. And if you live in NJ you will see wreaths on the front grills of cars, and reindeer antlers coming off the top. I am still amused by it, and I’ve been here 35 years! A lovely moment captured in your poem, thank you for the sentiment.

This poem is carried atop a car of lovely rhythm. Off to get our tree this morning!

I saw a car with a tree on top a few days ago, and I was so tickled! There’s something about it that makes me imagine a home totally different from my own….
