I love to watch the birds come to the feeder. Some eat and run, others seem to linger awhile. It sometimes reminds me of friends gathering for a bite to eat to catch up on all the latest news. When I was teaching, the coffee pot in the faculty room was the gathering spot where you heard all the latest gossip. I wondered if it might be the same for my backyard birds.

The Garden Café
by Rose Cappelli
They meet like old friends,
discuss the weather,
share the latest gossip.
They talk about the new baby wrens,
and the bluebird fledglings,
and visitors who’ve stayed too long.
They listen carefully to discover
which flowers have the sweetest nectar
and which feeder has the best blend of seeds.
Just an everyday gathering
at the garden café.

Rose, this is wonderful! I get the feeling of a busy cafe….the sound of gossip and friendship. Wonderful poem. Thanks for sharing this today. I hope you get to enjoy some time with your feathered friends today.

Rose, I like that you got your inspiration about a bird feeder gathering from the teacher lounge. Your poem shares the experience quite well. I love to open the front door to my house at night to hear the gathering of birds and other animals in the wooded area across the street.

Rose, I love listening in on this conversation, about things like which flowers had the sweetest nectar, and which feeders the best seeds and likening it to those you’ve had with friends around the coffee pot. It seems a perfect analogy.

Such a charming poem! Love watching birds (can’t have feeders now because of squirrels). I’m sure you’re right about them catching up on all the latest news. Smiled at the thought of them considering who has the best blend of seeds. 🙂

I love this! I don’t even know what those birds are in the photo. Time to learn about American birds… Ruth, thereisnosuchthingasagodforsakentown.blogspot.com

I’m not sure what they are either, Ruth! I pulled it from the internet.

I love your idea of the ‘garden cafe’, Rose, will not watch my own feeder again without thinking of your poem, that gathering for “the latest gossip”. Such great fun!

Rose, I love the idea of the garden cafe! That is so sweet imagining the birds gossiping, bragging about their kids, sharing resources, and more. So sweet!

I do currently have a nest box with baby wrens and another with bluebirds in my back yard.

Love this, Rose–the gossip about new baby wrens, visitors who’ve stayed too long, and who offers the best seeds. Perfect!

There are lots of stories to tell about the birds at our feeders! You inspire me to write from a bird’s point of view. Maybe the flicker who chases away the grackles, or the bluejays who suddenly this year have started to come, or the smartly dressed chickadees who grab-n-go…so many possibilities!

Grab-n-go! Love that idea.

We’re both thinking about birds this week! I spotlighted hummingbirds.
We had incredibly loud cicadas, and I wondered whether or not they interfered with the birds’ conversations. Did they have to yell to each other at their café? Maybe like a loud nightclub 🙂

Still waiting for the hummingbirds! Love your image of a loud nightclub.

This is delightful! I love the analogy to the coffee pot or water cooler in an office as a place to get the latest news. Now whenever I see birds at a feeder, I will wonder what they are discussing!
