Yesterday was the opening day of the baseball season and the Phillies won 10-4! I wasn’t there, but managed to catch most of it on TV, including the grand slam by Rhys Hoskins. So in honor of baseball and Poetry Friday, here’s a found poem from the words of Mike Sielski whose article appeared on the front page of the Philadelphia Inquirer this morning.
Opening Day
pomp and pageantry
a succession
of sights and scenes and sounds
an eerie silence
the crowd inhales
holds their breath
then
collective disapproval for the intentional walk
bases loaded
a 96-mph fastball rockets into the left-field seats
grand slam!
the most joyous seconds
of the most enjoyable day
of baseball
I wrote about baseball yesterday. What a game! I love your found poem..Lets go Phillies!

I am glad that you joined us at PF today Rose. I saw that you left a comment at Christie Wyman’s that since you wrote a poem, you would join us. Your opening day poem captures the highlights of yesterday’s game. The last 3 lines of your poem shared your enthusiasm for the game.

I love, love, love baseball and I love your found poem! The Rockies won yesterday too, although maybe not as smashingly as your Phillies! I’ll take 6-3! Woo Hoo! Our opening day pitcher, Kyle Freeland, played high school ball with one of my friend’s sons, and his mom is a secretary at one of the Denver Public Schools.

Even though baseball is not my favorite sport, you made me wish I’d headed down to watch Opening Day with the Mariners yesterday. I love how you captured the joyous seconds in these lines:
“bases loaded
a 96-mph fastball rockets into the left-field seats
grand slam!”

Our opening day, in the Rockies, is Friday. I’m hoping that we’ll have a poem for the day like yours, Rose!

Love how your poem not only captures the images, but also all of the feelings we experience throughout the day. My Cardinals didn’t do so well, but I’m hoping for better games to come.

Baseball isn’t really popular at all where I live, we only have one professional baseball team in the entire country after all, and they’re all the way on the other side of the continent! But even I, who know literally nothing about baseball (you….ummm…hit the ball and run, right?”) can appreciate the importance of a ritual like opening day – goodbye, winter doldrums, hello spring sunshine, and the promise of lazy, hazy, crazy summer days to come!!
